It’s always a sad day in the poker world when one of its beloved members pass away, so it is with deep regret that we say goodbye to one of the best poker players to grace the earth. Amir Vahedi, WSOP bracelet winner and renowned poker pro, passed away last January 8 in Las Vegas because of diabetes.
A Talented Player
Those who watch WSOP probably know very well who Amir Vahedi is. He was the Texas Hold’em player of the year way back in 2001 and he achieved second place in the 2003 Player of the Year Race by Card Player Magazine. It was in 2003 that Amir Vahedi was able to reach the final table in the WSOP Main Event, finishing in 6th place and taking home $250,000. It was his run in the $1,500 No-limit Hold’em event on the same WSOP year that was more impressive, though, as it was there that he won a WSOP bracelet and a $270,000 grand prize. His achievements don’t stop there. Vahedi was the champion in the third season of Ultimate Poker Challenge. All in all, he won over 3 million dollars in live tournament play. His final table finishes are practically countless, and his achievements even greater. But Vahedi will be most missed not for his achievements, but for his big heart.
A Great Friend
Fellow poker pros and tournament regulars have expressed their grief for a dear friend’s passing. Mark Seif was the one who revealed the news about Vahedi’s death to the world in his personal blog. He confirmed the news of the poker pro’s passing and went on to say that Amir was a ‘gentle and kind man who always made me laugh’. Howard Lederer called Amir ‘one of the good guys’. Joe Sebok also shared his deepest sympathies, saying that, in his early days of poker, only a few people who showed him as many smiles and as much love as Amir Vahedi. Indeed, it’s a true loss for the poker world, and an even bigger loss for his beloved family. Let us all offer are deepest condolences for Amir’s family and friends, and may we all take inspiration from Amir’s goodness and kindness, both on the felt and out of it.
